Frequently asked questions
Every Expressable speech therapist holds at least a master's degree (M.S., M.A., or M.Ed.) and carries the CCC-SLP certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). All therapists are licensed in every state where they practice. On average, our team brings 10+ years of clinical experience across hospitals, schools, private practice, and early intervention settings.
All Expressable speech therapists are full-time employees, not independent contractors. This staffing model means we can offer competitive pay and benefits, which lets us attract and retain top clinical talent and maintain consistent quality of care across every session.
Expressable matches each client with a therapist based on the specific condition being treated, the client's age, scheduling preferences, and geographic location (for state licensing). You can also browse therapist profiles and filter by specialty, insurance acceptance, and availability to find the right fit.
After matching with a therapist, you receive a personalized treatment plan. Sessions are live, one-on-one video calls where your therapist uses interactive exercises and real-time feedback. Between sessions, you get custom home practice activities, video lessons, and ongoing text-based support from your therapist to reinforce progress throughout the week.
To get started, you simply need a device with a camera, microphone, and stable internet connection. Laptops, desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones all work. A quiet space with minimal background noise is recommended so your therapist can accurately hear and assess speech production.
Expressable is currently in-network with hundreds of health insurance plans. Most insurance plans cover speech therapy when it is deemed medically necessary. When signing up for services, Expressable will check your insurance eligibility, coverage details, and estimated costs, including copays, authorization requirements, visit limits, and more.
As a courtesy, Expressable also bills certain health insurance companies we are out-of-network with.
Expressable offers competitive private-pay rates for clients who do not use insurance. The practice also accepts Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) as payment, making therapy accessible even without traditional insurance coverage. This is because speech therapy is generally considered a qualified medical expense under IRS guidelines, so clients can use pre-tax dollars to cover session costs. Contact Expressable directly for current session pricing.
Research consistently shows that online speech therapy (teletherapy) produces outcomes comparable to in-person sessions for the majority of speech and language conditions. Many families also report better consistency and fewer missed appointments with virtual sessions, which can accelerate overall progress. Learn more about how online speech therapy compares to in-person.
Expressable treats a wide range of pediatric speech and language conditions including articulation disorders, language delays, childhood apraxia of speech, stuttering and fluency disorders, autism spectrum-related communication challenges, social-pragmatic language difficulties, feeding and swallowing disorders (dysphagia), and augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) needs.
Expressable also provides a wide range of services to adults, including aphasia recovery after stroke, dysarthria, Parkinson's-related speech changes, voice disorders, fluency and stuttering therapy, cognitive-communication impairments, swallowing difficulties, gender-affirming voice therapy, accent modification, and professional speaking and communication coaching.
Visit https://app.expressable.com/signup and answer a few questions about you (or your child's) speech and language concerns. You'll pick a time that works best for your evaluation and you'll be matched with a licensed therapist suited to your needs and confirm scheduling. Then, we'll walk you through insurance verification or private-pay options before your first session.
In many cases, no physician referral is required to begin speech therapy with Expressable. However, some insurance plans do require a referral or prior authorization for coverage. Expressable's intake team will let you know if your specific plan has referral requirements, and they'll contact your doctor on your behalf to acquire the referral.
Expressable employs over 250 licensed speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists who collectively serve clients across all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. The team continues to grow to reduce wait times and improve scheduling flexibility.
Yes. In addition to speech-language pathology, Expressable provides virtual occupational therapy (OT) services. Clients can filter the provider directory to find occupational therapists alongside speech-language pathologists, making it easy to coordinate multiple therapy types through a single platform.
