About me

Hello! I am Laura Thorburn. As a speech pathologist for more than 20 years, I have had the pleasure of working with clients ranging from children to adults in a variety of settings. I hold a Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and am licensed as a speech pathologist in the state of California. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Central Florida and graduated summa cum laude with my master’s degree at the University of Georgia. While I was completing my internship at Roosevelt Warm Spring Rehabilitation Institute, my thesis was published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. I have presented research and moderated a variety of discussions within the field of aphasia and treatment. I began my career working exclusively with hearing-impaired children from pre-K to high school in Athens, Georgia. I assisted with speech and language development, which allowed most all of the students to become mainstreamed into the classroom. Once I moved to California, I was employed at Daniel Freeman Hospital covering the acute care, outpatient, and inpatient rehabilitation departments. I provided both habilitation and rehabilitation for a variety of speech, language, and cognitive impairments in children and adults. I have successfully assisted clients in resuming activities including driving, employment, volunteering, and mainstream education. Upon the closure of Daniel Freeman, I remain employed at UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital, where I continue to treat patients experiencing speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. In addition, I have provided treatment and consultative services to residents and families at various skilled nursing facilities within the Los Angeles area for the last 13 years. I have successfully assisted these patients with returning to their homes and resuming their prior level of function with improved safety. I have developed a cognitive wellness program that can be completed individually or in a group with a focus on minimizing impact of aging on cognition and ability to remain independent. Regardless of the setting, I have been impressed and fascinated by my clients’ perseverance and desire to improve. I frequently have clients and families express their concern and confusion with how to regain or improve their communication or cognition, and I find it incredibly rewarding to provide them the assistance they need to meet their goals by putting them on the right speech path.
