Get startedHi! I'm Lauren. I became a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) in 2019. I became an SLP because of the impact a family friend with Rett syndrome has had on my life. I had the privilege of babysitting an amazing child whose vibrant personality shined through, even though her ability to speak was limited...or so I initially thought. As I spent more time with her and her family, I began to see how much she had to say. I was introduced to alternative ways of communication like gestures, eye-gaze, partner-assisted scanning, and AAC devices. This experience opened my heart to the field of speech-language pathology. I felt called to this work, inspired by the words in Proverbs 31:8a: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” It is a true blessing to be part of a profession that allows me to do just that; advocate for others, and help them find their voice. I worked in settings such as: public schools. I have trainings and certifications in the following: AAC LAMP WFL trainings, AAC Tobii Dynavox Eye-Gaze Device trainings, Gestalt Language Processing courses, Aided Language Stimulation courses. I would describe my clinical style as client-centered, functional, and individualized/personalized.

The duration of speech therapy is different for everyone, and it depends on several factors. This includes the type of speech disorder or communication challenge, the frequency of speech therapy sessions, how often you practice the skills taught in speech therapy at home, your personal or professional goals, any underlying medical conditions, and more.

Speech therapy sessions are focused on each client’s care plan, and the activities done during sessions always relate to those goals. So, if a person is in speech therapy to better pronounce the /s/ sound, they’ll begin by learning how to make the sound by itself and work up to practicing it in conversation. Or if someone wants to improve the quality of their voice, their speech therapist will teach them appropriate breathing and vocal exercises. The therapist will aim to do as many trials of each exercise as possible, in order to make the most of each session.
Your speech therapist will constantly be measuring and assessing your response to these exercises. When needed, they’ll make changes to your treatment plan to help you make progress as quickly as possible. Regardless of your goals, your speech therapist will always provide practice activities to complete at home between sessions.
