About me
Hi! I'm Autumn, a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP). When I was in high school, I babysat a little girl with Down syndrome. I watched as she went through speech therapy and saw the difference that being able to communicate her wants and needs made in her daily life. I knew that was the difference I wanted to make in people's lives! In college, I became certified in the Sentence Writing Strategy and The Paragraph Writing Strategy to help with students' written language skills. I also worked in the Foreign Accent Reduction program with our international students, where we taught them how to say words with a Midwestern American accent. We also worked on slang, idioms, and metaphors to help them understand their peers. Lastly, my fellowship in grad school required me to be a teaching assistant for our Introduction to Interpersonal Communication class. I taught students to give different types of speeches and grade the speeches they gave in class. That was a very valuable lesson for me as I worked with kids in my 4-H club to find their public speaking skills. I have my TESOL certification and have used that while teaching international students to speak English on different online platforms. My favorite thing to teach is the pesky /R/ sound--I love it when I can help someone get clear /R/ sounds in their speech for the first time! I have worked with adults with developmental disabilities in workshops and in group homes. I have done a lot of in-home early intervention speech therapy, and also have experience with individuals with expressive and receptive language disorders and articulation disorders. Most recently, I have been teaching confident speaking and phonics online on a platform called Outschool. I would describe my clinical style as client-centered, functional, individualized/personalized, family-centric, and rooted in client empowerment to create self-advocates.

I have shared this in a previous review, but I was initially very skeptical about how speech therapy you can happen over zoom but it ended up being the best thing for us considering I was pregnant and going to give birth a couple months after my son started speech therapy with expressable and we were able to maintain consistent therapy sessions solely because I could log him in on Zoom and he can do the session that way. Of course, there are some obstacles with it being over Zoom, but both therapists that we had were absolutely amazing in engaging my two year-old son and playing computer games, among other things to help jumpstart and develop his speech. We started therapy about 6-8 months ago and he was only saying a few words, but the therapist helped him build his vocabulary and give him confidence to say much more and now he is speaking sentences with us and is able to communicate well which was exactly our goal and we are so grateful for this opportunity with expressable, and his therapists Ashley and Autumn! I would highly highly recommend to any family that is looking for speech therapy for their children!

My son’s speech sessions have been greatly helpful in launching and developing his speech! Although I was skeptical about virtual speech therapy sessions, it has been incredible, especially as I was pregnant and once I had another baby because my son was able to continue his speech therapy from home and not have a lapse in therapy! It has been awesome. We worked with Ashley and Autumn and bother therapists have been phenomenal and my son always felt super comfortable with them!

It’s hard getting a two year old to stop and pay attention but I do think I’m learning ways to help him be more verbal and expressive.

Autumn was AMAZING! She took the time to discover my individual needs and provide assignments to assist. Each section was unique as she ensured to make sure I learned while having a great time. Additionally, the process to enroll into the program was fairly easy as every individual I interacted with was professional and extremely friendly.
