Abigail Kunchandy
Licensed Occupational Therapist (M.S., OTR/L)
About me
Hi! I’m Abigail. I initially got into occupational therapy (OT) after shadowing the outpatient clinic that my mom received physical therapy at. There were OTs there helping patients rehab after being discharged from the hospital but requiring further therapy. That alone was enough for me to decide I want to do occupational therapy. I knew I wanted to do something within healthcare and I loved the idea that OTs, as opposed to other disciplines, could build relationships with their clients and focus on meaningful occupations. When I started OT school, I realized how broad it really is and how we can help all people across the lifespan in various settings. I especially loved learning about pediatrics and play-based therapy and having a background of babysitting/loving kids, I thought going into pediatrics was the perfect fit for me. I have taken the DIR Floortime 101 Course. It is an introductory course that explains the DIR model (Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship Based) and advocates for play-based, child-led therapy on the floor at the child's level. Additionally, I have experience evaluating and treating clients in the pediatric outpatient setting. I approach therapy with a functional, client-centered, and highly individualized style. I prioritize client empowerment to help each person build confidence, independence, and lifelong self-advocacy skills.
