Get startedHi! I'm Megan. I became a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) in 2024. My path to becoming a speech-language pathologist wasn’t traditional, but in many ways, it feels like everything came full circle. I’ve always known that I wanted a career centered around working with and helping others. With a natural interest in the area of communication, I opted to pursue this area of study during my undergraduate career, pairing it with a minor in health studies to better understand the structure and impact of our healthcare system. After graduating, I found myself working in innovative healthcare technology companies focused on improving patient care across the care continuum. While I was inspired by the missions and values of these companies, I realized I was still one step removed from the hands-on, personal impact I truly craved. I kept coming back to the field of speech-language pathology—an area that perfectly blends my passion for communication, and working to better the lives of others. I began taking courses and never looked back! I now have the privilege of helping individuals improve their communication every day. No two clients are the same, and that’s what makes this work so meaningful. Being able to tailor care to each person and witness their growth firsthand is what empowers me and reaffirms why I chose this path! During my most recent work experiences, I worked in a public school system, and had the opportunity to work with the district's most severe/profound students diagnosed with ASD. During this time, I became very proficient in working with non-verbal students who relied on total communication approaches to communicate, as well as AAC. Through this work, I expanded my knowledge with systems such as TouchChat and Tobii Dynavox, and using these systems to support functional communication with the young children I serviced. I worked in settings such as: Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Private Practice. I would describe my clinical style as client-centered, functional, individualized/personalized, family-centric, routines-based, and rooted in client empowerment to create self-advocates.

Adults commonly receive speech therapy to overcome problems from childhood that weren’t properly treated (such as a stutter or articulation issue), treat speech and language issues due to illness or injury, such as a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or ALS, improve communication skills due to a clinical diagnosis, such as aphasia, acquired apraxia of speech, or dysarthria, improve confidence and communication skills in the workplace, such as public speaking and interviewing, reduce accents that are regional or based on your country of origin, modify the pitch, intonation, and quality of your voice, and more!
The duration of speech therapy is different for everyone, and it depends on several factors. This includes the type of speech disorder or communication challenge, the frequency of speech therapy sessions, how often you practice the skills taught in speech therapy at home, your personal or professional goals, any underlying medical conditions, and more.

Speech therapy sessions are focused on each client’s care plan, and the activities done during sessions always relate to those goals. So, if a person is in speech therapy to better pronounce the /s/ sound, they’ll begin by learning how to make the sound by itself and work up to practicing it in conversation. Or if someone wants to improve the quality of their voice, their speech therapist will teach them appropriate breathing and vocal exercises. The therapist will aim to do as many trials of each exercise as possible, in order to make the most of each session.
Your speech therapist will constantly be measuring and assessing your response to these exercises. When needed, they’ll make changes to your treatment plan to help you make progress as quickly as possible. Regardless of your goals, your speech therapist will always provide practice activities to complete at home between sessions.
