Why I Started Expressable

As a speech-language pathologist, the best part of my job is helping children and families feel empowered to communicate. But if I’m doing my job correctly, then I’m not the only one helping--families support growth, and individuals are motivated to continue learning.

The worst part of my job? Insurance paperwork. I don’t want to dedicate time thinking about how to make my plan of care fit into insurance companies’ requirements. I want to spend time creating therapy ideas for my clients that will help them reach their goals. I’ve worked in outpatient clinics, in schools, and in home health. Every clinician that I know hates the paperwork; that’s a given.

Insurance headaches weren’t just affecting my job, but the families that I was serving. Insurance denials, out-of-pocket expenses, and limited number of covered sessions meant that children and families weren’t receiving the therapy that they often desperately needed. No family should be forced to choose between paying out-of-pocket for their child’s therapy needs or paying for groceries that week.

I wanted to consider what it might look like to provide fantastic speech-language therapy in an affordable way for those whose insurance plans weren’t meeting their needs. Owning a brick-and-mortar clinic means paying rent. Doing home health means the price of gas to travel all around my city. These costs would eventually be pushed onto families. But teletherapy...now we’re on to something.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) approved teletherapy as an appropriate method of service delivery in 2005. The lack of overhead costs in teletherapy means that a family’s money can go further. Without the barrier of geography, a clinician with a specialty is able to provide for a client living across the state. Teletherapy checks so many boxes for both clinicians and the families they serve.

So, I decided to start Expressable: a teletherapy company dedicated to providing for families in the way they need. Clinicians are able to spend less time jumping through insurance hoops and more time doing what they love. My goal is for every family and therapist to feel like their goals are in reach.
