Get startedHi! I'm Marykate. I became a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) in 2022. My journey to becoming a speech-language pathologist was rooted in a deep love for human connection and the transformative power of language. From an early age, I was drawn to the beauty of communication—not just the words we speak, but the ways we express our thoughts, emotions, and identity. As an SLP, I am privileged to help individuals find their voice, whether that means supporting a child’s first words, guiding someone through recovery after a stroke, or helping a person with a communication difference feel heard and understood. There is nothing more fulfilling than watching confidence grow as self-expression becomes possible. For me, this work is more than a profession—it’s a calling. I believe communication is a fundamental human right, and I’m honored to play a role in helping others share their unique stories with the world. In addition to my work as a speech-language pathologist, I have completed courses in the Orton-Gillingham approach, a structured, multisensory method designed to support individuals with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. This training has deepened my love for building literacy skills—helping children and adults alike break through reading and writing challenges and discover the confidence that comes from understanding the written word. I believe literacy is not only foundational for academic success, but also a powerful tool for self-expression and lifelong learning. Watching someone connect with language—whether spoken or written—is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. I worked in settings such as school and private practice. I would describe my clinical style as holistic, client-centered, functional, individualized/personalized, family-centric, routines-based, and strengths-based.

Outside of my work as a speech-language pathologist, I find joy and grounding in the simple, beautiful things in life. I’m a proud mom to amazing children who constantly remind me of the wonder in everyday moments. Watching them grow and explore the world is one of my greatest gifts. I also have a deep love for nature and animals—especially my horses. Time spent with them, whether riding or just being present in their company, brings me peace and perspective. I’m equally passionate about gardening, and I’ve been slowly building a colorful, English-style garden filled with life and beauty. It’s a place where creativity meets patience, and where I can get my hands in the soil and unwind. These hobbies not only keep me balanced, but they also fuel the empathy, creativity, and care I bring into my work as an SLP.

Adults commonly receive speech therapy to overcome problems from childhood that weren’t properly treated (such as a stutter or articulation issue), treat speech and language issues due to illness or injury, such as a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or ALS, improve communication skills due to a clinical diagnosis, such as aphasia, acquired apraxia of speech, or dysarthria, improve confidence and communication skills in the workplace, such as public speaking and interviewing, reduce accents that are regional or based on your country of origin, modify the pitch, intonation, and quality of your voice, and more!
The duration of speech therapy is different for everyone, and it depends on several factors. This includes the type of speech disorder or communication challenge, the frequency of speech therapy sessions, how often you practice the skills taught in speech therapy at home, your personal or professional goals, any underlying medical conditions, and more.

Speech therapy sessions are focused on each client’s care plan, and the activities done during sessions always relate to those goals. So, if a person is in speech therapy to better pronounce the /s/ sound, they’ll begin by learning how to make the sound by itself and work up to practicing it in conversation. Or if someone wants to improve the quality of their voice, their speech therapist will teach them appropriate breathing and vocal exercises. The therapist will aim to do as many trials of each exercise as possible, in order to make the most of each session.
Your speech therapist will constantly be measuring and assessing your response to these exercises. When needed, they’ll make changes to your treatment plan to help you make progress as quickly as possible. Regardless of your goals, your speech therapist will always provide practice activities to complete at home between sessions.
