About me

Hi! I'm Emily. I became a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) in 2016. I have always been fascinated by science & the medical field, but I also enjoyed learning about different languages when I signed up for German as an elective. Speech-language pathology became a wonderful weave of my 2 passions when I was considering careers. When I was a junior in undergrad, my Grandpa Glenn had been hospitalized due to complications from a fall and a vague dementia diagnosis. He was in the ICU and had trouble communicating due to his trach and paralysis issues. He couldn't write, he couldn't speak (without his speaking valve) and he couldn't move his arms to orient to a communication board. I knew I wanted to work with adults when I supported his communication breakdown. As a novice SLP student, I went through the alphabet to help him spell out what he was trying to say. He spelled "Calendar" because all he wanted to ask was "What day is it?" He couldn't read his calendar across the ICU room. This will always be a pivotal moment for me, where I made the promise to support all types of people who are having trouble communicating. Language is something we all take for granted and it is a gift I hope to embrace everyday while also supporting others in giving them their gift back when they have lost it. I have worked in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs IL/AL/AL w/memory care/LTC/LTC memory care), home health, and outpatient neurological rehab. I am trained in Vital-Stim, LSVT-LOUD, and as a Certified Dementia Practitioner. I've taught various CEUs related to aphasia interventions, the role of the SLP in neuro-cognitive disorders, and cognitive-linguistic decline in Alzheimer's Disease (presented at ACRM). I would describe my clinical style as holistic, client-centered, functional, individualized, and rooted in client empowerment by creating self-advocates.

Other interests

I grew up on 60 acres of woods with most of my extended family in Northeast, Ohio so I have always loved nature, being outside, sports, and enjoying everything the outdoors has to offer. One of my favorite things to do outside is grow dahlias. They are my favorite flower. 4 years ago, my sister-in-law gave me one dahlia tuber and ever since I have been hooked. Now I have a garden of over 20+ varieties. I love taking care of them every summer, cutting them to create fresh floral bouquets, and I enjoy passing them out to my friends & family. I wish I could mail them given my new virtual role :) I'll have to figure a way to share with the Expressable team. I love spending time with my husband, Brent (His college nickname is Bex so that's what you'll hear me call him), our dog, Marty, and our families. I love spending summers at the pool with all of them. Being in the sun is my favorite. Finally, I love traveling. I have been fortunate to travel to many beautiful places all over the world including Kenya, Costa Rica, Panama, and Aruba. We have plenty of bucket list places left to go!
