About me

Hi! I'm Autumn. I became a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) in 2000. When I was in high school, I babysat a little girl with Down Syndrome. I watched as she went through speech therapy and saw the difference that being able to communicate her wants and needs made in her daily life. I knew that was the difference I wanted to make in people's lives! In college, I became certified in the Sentence Writing Strategy and The Paragraph Writing Strategy to help with students' written language skills. I also worked in the Foreign Accent Reduction program with our international students where we taught them how to say words with a Midwestern American accent. We also worked on slang, idioms, and metaphors to help them understand their peers. Lastly, my fellowship in grad school required me to be a Teaching Assistant for our Introduction to Interpersonal Communication class. I had to teach students to give different types of speeches and grade the speeches they gave in class. That has been a very valuable lesson for me as I have worked with kids in my 4-H club to find their public speaking skills. I have my TESOL certification and have used that while teaching international students to speak English on different online platforms. My favorite thing to teach is the pesky /R/ sound - I love it when I can help someone get clear /R/ sounds in their speech for the first time! I have worked with adults with developmental disabilities in workshops and in group homes. I have done a lot of in home early intervention speech therapy, and also have experience with individuals with expressive and receptive language disorders or articulation disorders. Most recently, I have been teaching confident speaking and phonics online on a platform called Outschool. I would describe my clinical style as client-centered, functional, individualized/personalized, family-centric, and rooted in client empowerment to create self-advocates.
